| sin que se haga sentimental, | Without sounding sentimental, |
| fuera de la vanguardia, | Old fashioned, |
| o evidente panfleto, | Or sounding like a polemical pamphlet |
| si debo usar palabras | If I should I use words |
| como Flota Cubana de Pesca, | Like Cuban fishing fleet |
| y Playa Girón | And Girón beach |
| Compañeros de música, | My fellow musicians, |
| tomando en cuenta | Taking into account |
| esas politonales y audaces canciones, | Today’s daring polytonal songs, |

| ¿Qué tipo de armonía | What type harmonies |
| se debe usar para hacer | Should one use to write |
| la canción de este barco | The song about this ship |
| con hombres de poca niñez, | With men who hardly had a childhood |
| hombres y solamente, | Men who are just |
| hombres sobre cubierta | Tough sailors on deck |
| Hombres negros y rojos | Men black, red |
| y azules, los hombres que pueblan | And blue, the men who populate |
| el Playa Girón. | Girón beach |
| Compañeros de historia, | My companions in history |

| lo implacable que debe ser la verdad, | How unforgiving the truth must be, |
